Plant-Based Nail Polish Without HEMA or Toxic Chemicals: What Does Ultra-Clean Really Mean?

Clean beauty is changing the way we think about nail polish. Instead of simply choosing a colour we love, more of us are looking at the ingredients behind our manicure — asking what is in the bottle, what has been left out, and whether our beauty choices can be kinder to our nails and the planet. That is where plant-based, ultra-clean nail polish comes in.

At Earthy Nail Polish, we believe you shouldn't have to choose between beautiful colour and more considered ingredients. Our award-winning nail polish is 79% natural origin, 85% biosourced, plant-based, vegan and 21-free, with key ingredients derived from cassava, corn and sugar cane. Our formula is also certified to ISO 16128.

But what does all of that actually mean?

What is plant-based nail polish?

Plant-based nail polish uses ingredients that are derived, wholly or partly, from renewable plant sources rather than relying solely on conventional petrochemical sources.

At Earthy, ingredients including butyl acetate, ethyl acetate, nitrocellulose, acetyl tributyl citrate and alcohol are sourced from materials including sugar cane, cassava and corn.

This doesn't mean that every ingredient in a plant-based polish comes directly from a plant — nail polish is still a sophisticated cosmetic formulation that needs solvents, film-formers, pigments and other functional ingredients to create the finish and durability you expect.

Instead, the goal is to thoughtfully replace conventional sources wherever possible while maintaining the performance of a modern nail polish.

And that is what makes the term plant-based so interesting: it's not about compromising on colour or wear. It's about rethinking where the ingredients come from.

What does "21-free" nail polish mean?

You may have seen nail polishes described as "3-free", "5-free", "10-free" or, in Earthy's case, 21-free.

The number refers to specific ingredients or ingredient groups that the formulation is made without.

Earthy's 21-free formula excludes ingredients including:

  • Toluene

  • Xylene

  • DBP and DPHP phthalates

  • Formaldehyde

  • Formaldehyde releasers

  • Tosylamide

  • Triphenyl phosphate (TPP)

  • Camphor

  • Ethyl tosylamide

  • Hydroquinone

  • MEHQ

  • Parabens

  • Phenoxyethanol

  • Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)

  • Triclosan

  • Animal-derived ingredients

  • Gluten

  • And other ingredients listed in Earth's full 21-free standard.

This is an important distinction: "clean" does not mean "ingredient-free."

A high-performance nail polish needs ingredients to form a smooth film, dry effectively, adhere to the nail and deliver colour. Ultra-clean formulation is about being intentional about which ingredients are used and which are left out.

What is HEMA — and why are people looking for HEMA-free nail products?

HEMA stands for 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate, an ingredient associated particularly with UV/LED-cured gel nail systems.

HEMA has become an important topic in nail care because of its potential to cause allergic reactions. Under the EU Cosmetics Regulation, HEMA is restricted in nail products to professional use and products containing it must carry a warning that it can cause an allergic reaction.

That is why HEMA-free has become an increasingly important consideration for people choosing gel-style manicures.

There is an important difference between conventional nail polish and gel polish, however.

Earthy's regular nail polish is an air-drying, plant-based 21-free formulation. For those who want the look and longevity of a gel manicure, Earthy Professional Gel Lock is specifically formulated to be HEMA-free and vegan.

The Earthy Professional Gel Lock system is designed to be used over Earthy Nail Polish, creating a glossy, chip-resistant finish that can last for up to 14 days.

Is "HEMA-free" the same as "non-toxic"?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most important things to understand when shopping for "clean" nail products.

HEMA-free simply means that HEMA is not used in the relevant formulation. It doesn't automatically mean that a product contains no other potentially sensitising ingredients or that every ingredient is natural.

Similarly, "non-toxic" is often used as a marketing term rather than a precise scientific description.

At Earthy, we prefer to be more specific.

Rather than simply saying "non-toxic", we can tell you what our formula is made from, what it is free from, its natural-origin percentage, its biosourced percentage and the standards it follows.

That's what transparency in clean beauty should look like.

So, what makes Earthy Nail Polish an ultra-clean formulation?

There are several parts to the Earthy approach.

1. Plant-based sources

Earthy's core nail polish formula is made with ingredients derived from cassava, corn and sugar cane. This allows conventional petrochemical sources to be replaced with renewable, plant-derived alternatives in key parts of the formulation.

2. 79% natural origin

Earthy Nail Polish is 79% natural origin, with the formulation certified according to ISO 16128, an international standard used to calculate and communicate natural-origin and organic-origin content in cosmetic products.

3. 85% biosourced

The formula is also 85% biosourced, highlighting the significant proportion of ingredients originating from renewable biological sources.

4. 21-free formulation

Earthy's 21-free approach means a broad list of ingredients traditionally associated with conventional nail polish formulations has been deliberately excluded.

5. Calcium and magnesium

Clean formulation isn't only about what is left out.

Earthy Nail Polish is formulated with calcium and magnesium, with the brand's testing reporting improvements in nail hardness and fragility among users.

The result is a nail polish designed to deliver more than just colour: beautiful high-shine nails with a formula created with nail condition in mind.

Does plant-based nail polish actually last?

One of the biggest misconceptions about natural or plant-based beauty products is that choosing a more considered formula means sacrificing performance.

It doesn't have to.

Earthy's nail polish has been tested for wear, with the brand reporting 96.6% intact wear after six days and an average 6.5-day chip-free wear period.

For maximum longevity and shine, Earthy recommends pairing its colour with its base and top coats.

And if you want an even more long-lasting, salon-style finish, the Earthy Professional Gel Lock system can be used with Earthy colours for up to 14 days of wear.

What should you look for when choosing an ultra-clean nail polish?

If you're trying to make your manicure routine more considered, don't rely on one buzzword.

Instead, look for:

✔ A transparent ingredient list You should be able to see exactly what is in the formula.

✔ Clearly defined "free-from" claims Look for brands that explain exactly what their "free-from" number means.

✔ Natural-origin information Certifications and standards such as ISO 16128 can provide more context than simply calling a product "natural."

✔ Plant-derived ingredients Look for renewable sources such as sugar cane, corn and cassava.

✔ HEMA-free options for gel systems If you're choosing a UV/LED-cured gel product, check whether HEMA is present. Earthy Gel Lock is specifically HEMA-free.

✔ Vegan and cruelty-free credentials Look for recognised certification rather than relying solely on marketing language.

✔ Sustainability beyond the formula Consider the bottle, cap, packaging and what happens when the product is finished.

Clean beauty should consider the whole manicure

For Earthy, ultra-clean beauty doesn't stop with the formula.

Our nail polish uses a bamboo cap instead of single-use plastic, with a post-consumer recycled plastic seal. We also operate a return and reuse programme, allowing customers to send empty bottles and caps back to Earthy so they can be cleaned and reused as part of a circular approach.

Even our remover is designed with the same philosophy: Earthy's nail polish remover is 99% natural origin and 100% acetone- and acetate-free.

Because a truly considered manicure isn't only about what goes onto your nails.

It's also about what happens to the bottle after you've finished it.

The future of nail polish is more considered

The clean beauty movement isn't about making unrealistic promises or pretending that nail polish can be made from a handful of kitchen ingredients.

It's about better choices, greater transparency and smarter formulation.

A plant-based nail polish can combine renewable, biosourced ingredients with modern cosmetic science. A 21-free formula can leave out a carefully defined list of ingredients while still delivering high shine and lasting colour. And a HEMA-free gel system can offer a salon-inspired finish while giving consumers another option when choosing their manicure products.

At Earthy, that's the philosophy behind our approach:

Better for you. Better for the planet. Better informed.

So the next time you reach for your favourite shade, don't just ask "What colour do I want?"

Ask:

What's inside the bottle?

And choose a manicure that looks beautiful from the outside — while making more thoughtful choices on the inside.
